In the 11th-13th century, the Sigulda area was dominated by the Livs of Gauja, which formed wooden fortifications at the summits of the castles. The Sigulda Palace of the order of Livonia, built in 1207, was built as a Castellum-style fortress, but was later converted into a Convention-style structure.
